About Us

“Enhancing the opportunities and status of people with disabilities through sport and education” Gerry Kinsella MBE (Chairman)

who we are

GB Power Hockey Association is the governing body for the exciting disability sport, Power Hockey. It is an invasion sport played using specially designed power wheelchairs and a hockey ball. Power Hockey is played predominantly by power wheelchair users similarly to Power Football, which most Power Hockey participants also play.

It is a fun sport that any disabled person can participate in over the age of 8 years old. Besides the fun, Power Hockey helps improve the mental and physical health of power wheelchair users and subsequently raises the awareness of the benefits to participants. The aspect of playing on a competitive level is something that ceases to exist within mainstream society for power wheelchair users. The skills acquired from playing Power Hockey competitively can be deferred to key life skills which include teamwork, leadership and communication.

whAT WE DO

As a CIO with advanced knowledge of the disability sport, Power Hockey, our aim is to provide and assist in the provision of facilities by creating a governing body for a number of Power Hockey clubs to be established. This will allow for leagues to be formulated and regulated. This is in the interest of social welfare of those who have a disability, giving those individuals a chance to be a part of a community, a sports team and a chance to play at a competitive level.

To develop the sport and increase the potential number of players, ‘Power Hockey Hubs’ will be developed. The Power Hockey Hubs will be existing disability sports centres, with knowledge and experience of hosting disability sport competitions. Each Power Hockey Hub will have its own stock of Power Hockey chairs to ensure that players do not (initially) have to purchase their own chairs.
