22/03/23 – Meet Dylan! Growing the sport of Power Hockey in Wales

A case study from one of our recently established Hubs, at the Cardiff City FC Foundation, showcasing how introducing Power Hockey in Cardiff is having a positive impact:

“Dylan is 12 years old, he has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and is a full time power wheelchair user. Dylan struggles to take part in lots of the wheelchair sports which require him to self-propel in a manual wheelchair. Therefore, when we heard about the ‘power wheelchair’ sports club that was being launched in Cardiff, Dylan jumped at the chance of giving it a go. In the spring of 2022 Dylan first took part in some trial sessions over the school holidays, where he learnt some important wheelchair skills and the rules of the game. From this moment, we could see that this was a sport he was really going to enjoy and his competitiveness was already showing! The coaches at Cardiff are welcoming and accommodating to Dylan’s needs, adjusting his chair to ensure he is comfortable throughout the session. Power sports has allowed Dylan a chance to feel part of a team and to make new friends who are also wheelchair users. We hope this sport will continue to grow as it allows so many others with physical disabilities a chance to be involved in sport and to feel valued in society. We are very grateful to all those that have been involved in the funding of the new chairs and making this sport accessible to all. Dylan certainly has something to aim for now and is very much looking forward to his future in Power Sports.”
